Analyzing the Trade for Murphy
What we actually gave up, what we actually gained, & why Murphy will be a franchise cornerstone.
Monday afternoon the Atlanta Braves put Mark Feinsand’s brain in a blender when they acquired former Oakland Athletics catcher, Sean Murphy.
Feinsand’s rumors on Murphy & the Braves, note the time & dates on each tweet:
Mark was right, but he was wrong; while being right all along. Take that, M. Night Shyamalan.
Here are the official details of the deal:
The basic gist of the three-team trade from the Braves perspective is we traded William Contreras & a slew of prospects unlikely to impact the big league Braves, in exchange for a win-now catcher.
Atlanta Package, Broken Down
William Contreras is by far the most valuable asset departing the Braves organization. The odd part of it all is that he didn’t even go to the team that dealt the best player in the entire deal, William went to Milwaukee. *scratches head*
Wild Bill was a National League all-star selection this past season & was a top-10 batting catcher in Major League Baseball. He has never been as valuable as he is right now, today.
With that being said, William & Sean’s 2022 compared:
wRC+: Contreras 136 to Murphy’s 122.
Defensive fWAR: Murphy’s 11.0 to Contreras’ -3.4.
Total fWAR: Murphy’s 5.1 to Contreras’ 2.4.
Kyle Muller, Freddy Tarnok, Manny Piña, Royber Salinas, & Justin Yeager were also dealt from Atlanta as part of this trade.
