It’s already public knowledge that longtime shortstop Dansby Swanson & the Atlanta Braves had “engaged in contract talks”, but that was really the full extent of Swanson contract news, until now…
National Corporate baseball correspondent Jon Heyman is reporting that Dansby Swanson was offered a contract worth $100 million. Obviously Dansby didn’t accept the Braves offer because he’s currently a free agent.
Honestly, I’m glad he didn’t accept. I’ve spent the entirety of Dansby’s Atlanta tenure on an emotional roller coaster, much like his annual up-&-down ability to hit a baseball. But I will say this for Dansby: he’s a winner. BUT he is not worth one penny more than $100 million, unless that contract was spread out over the course of the next century.
In a free agent class that includes Trea Turner, Carlos Correa, & Xander Bogaerts, Dansby’s the bargain bin option.
The Braves spent 2022 locking up their guys for the next 5+ years. Dansby was offered a contract. The Braves will not exceed that original offer, I promise you.
The Braves earned $496,000,000 in baseball revenue in 2022. They have the money to buy any player walking this earth. If they offered Dansby $100 million, then they think he’s worth ONLY $100 million.
Anthopoulos will more than likely slap a qualifying offer on Dan & keep it moving. When Dansby signs elsewhere the Braves will receive a draft pick for him & they’ll sign the shortstop they want from Trea, Correa, & Bogaerts.
Win-win, thank you for your service, see you when you visit like Freddie.
